About Us

The Paumonak Surfcasters were founded in
1986 by John Fritz and Walter Joseph.

The club sought to enlist those who were devoted
to the sport as well as the environmental issues
that affected it.(In loving memory of John Fritz)

Many early members went on to become very
active in the preservation of the fishery as well as
protecting the rights of all to access the beaches.

At the present time Paumonak lists several members on the Board of Directors for the Long Island Beach Buggy Association (LIBBA), the New York Sportfishing Federation and  The Coastal Conservation Assoc.

The club is fortunate to have among it's founders, people who aided in the formation of the New York Surf Fishing contest. It is these members, some of whom still are active members, that Paumonak owes it's roots to. Thanks Guys !!

The call to the surf is not for every angler, but for those who answer the rewards are many. Surf fishing may not be the most productive type of fishing one can do, but that is why our successes are doubly gratifying. Plying our sport from the shoreline gives us the opportunity to experience nature first hand. Whether it be watching a deer come to the ocean's edge under a moonlit sky or having a rowdy striper smack your plug a rod's length away while quietly wading a back bay, these are the things you just can't enjoy fishing any other way.

Members in good standing are eligible to participate in club meetings, outings, family beach barbecues and monthly club fishing contests. Monthly contests are held on a prescribed weekend so there is ample time to prepare. The club holds an awards dinner at the end of each season to honor members who have earned awards for the year. Members also are eligible to participate and enter fish in the New York Surf Fishing contest.
